Staying in an Airbnb can help you earn free flights or drinks with Delta

Delta is offering SkyMiles to people who stay at an Airbnb.

Staying in an Airbnb can help you get a free flight.

Delta –Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport's largest carrier – has partnered with Airbnb to offer SkyMiles (Delta's frequent flier program) to anyone who stays in an Airbnb, or rents out their home, through the website, a news release says.

“We see a lot of our members, especially the millennials, wanting to gain different experiences with Airbnb,” Sandeep Dube, Delta’s vice president of SkyMiles, told

Airbnb was founded in 2008 and is now available in more than 34,000 cities and 191 countries. It's become one of the most popular ways for people to book a place to stay while traveling because it's often cheaper than staying in a hotel.

It's the first program between Airbnb and a major U.S. airline, Delta notes. Airbnb has partnered with other global airlines on similar programs though.

AJC says the partnership shows Airbnb is becoming more established in the travel industry, since the loyalty program is similar to those offered by hotel chains.

Here's how many miles you'll get

The offer is available to all SkyMiles members (it's free to join). All you have to do is reserve your Airbnb through Delta's website here. When you do, this is what you could get:

  • For qualifying Airbnb stays, you can earn 1 SkyMile for every dollar spend on your rental.
  • You can earn up to 1,000 bonus SkyMiles and a $25 Airbnb coupon for your first stay in an Airbnb rental.
  • People who rent out their home on Airbnb for the first time can earn up to 25,000 bonus SkyMiles.

SkyMiles can be used to buy plane tickets, upgrade your seats, buy memberships to Delta Sky Clubs, or buy premium drinks at Delta's clubs, among other offers.
