Police believe a couple that was arrested in a routine traffic stop on Friday is responsible for a recent rash of thefts of musical instruments from three different St. Paul colleges.

The Pioneer Press reports that St. Paul police said two suspects were arrested on Friday afternoon in Richfield. Police believe the couple is responsible for stealing a violin, a guitar, trumpets, saxophones, trombones and other instruments from Macalester College, the University of St. Thomas and Hamline University in recent weeks.

St. Paul police spokesman Sgt. Paul Paulos said the couple allegedly walked into the schools and walked out with any instruments they could collect from the music departments, which they would then re-sell at a local pawn shop.

In addition to stealing instruments investigators also believe the couple is suspected of stealing jewelry, electronics and power tools from real estate open houses in the Twin Cities.

The Associate Director of Public Safety at St. Thomas, Mike Barrett told WCCO that surveillance video from Nov. 4, showed two males stealing a guitar from the university. Another video captured a man and a woman stealing trombones.

The report says the couple pawned some of the instruments using their own identification. So the serial numbers of the instruments and the couple's names were entered into the automated system, which then sent out the alert.

Fox 9 reports that investigators believe the couple are meth addicts who were stealing and selling the instruments to support their habit.
