Bill in Congress to cap cost of Stillwater bridge threatens project

A bill in Congress would limit the use of federal funds for the crossing at $574 million. That's significantly lower than the project's estimated $700 million price tag. Democratic Congressman Keith Ellison says he's not against building the bridge but says the price is just too high. The group lobbying for the crossing says that cost also includes highway improvements in both Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The state legislators signed a letter to federal lawmakers opposing a plan to build a $700 million bridge that would replace the current lift bridge. Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann and Gov. Dayton have spoken out in favor of the bridge. The legislators who signed the letter say the money could be better spent elsewhere.

Movement begins for new Hastings bridge

The process of moving the bridge span for the new Hastings bridge over the Mississippi River has begun. The 545-foot span will be lifted into place next Wednesday. Residents gathered along the Mississippi Friday to watch the historic event.

Stillwater Lift Bridge to close for 4 months

The Stillwater Lift Bridge will close Monday for four months while MnDot crews make repairs. The bridge will not reopen until late December. The lift span will open to boat traffic on Sundays from Oct. 15 through Nov. 5 and will also not open again until late December.

100 Central Minn. Girl Scouts travel to D.C. for 100th anniversary event

Central Minnesota's Girl Scout troops will be well represented at the 100th anniversary of the organization Saturday in Washington, D.C. About 100 local Girl Scouts will appear on behalf of more than 35 troops. About 200,000 people are expected to attend the Girl Scouts Rock the Mall sing-a-long event at the National Mall.

New exhibit honors I-35W bridge collapse rescue workers

A new exhibit opened Saturday at the Firefighters Hall and Museum in northeast Minneapolis to commemorate the efforts of rescue workers after the Interstate 35W bridge collapse on Aug. 1, 2007. Titled "81 Minutes: After the Bridge Collapse," the exhibit chronicles the training that happened ahead of the collapse and the collaboration between firefighters and residents after.

A pair of ex-staffers for former U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman have a released a new novel that weaves in their personal experiences working in Washington, D.C., among the tale of a fictional Minnesota Senator on the rise in the nation's capitol. "Capitol Hell" is described as a saucy novel about crazy co-workers and high-maintenance politicians, among other things.
