Police arrested Patrick Paul Costanzo after surveillance video captured him wheeling shopping carts full of laundry detergent out of the store without paying. Fox 9 says the suspect visited the store almost daily and allegedly stole thousands of dollars worth of detergent.

A recycling facility for organic materials is generating a nasty odor issue for residents in Shakopee. One resident is concerned the problem is so bad it could decrease home values. The Shakopee Patch has more on how the city and the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community are working to limit the smell from the facility.

After 15 years in Rice County, Trystar Inc. is planning to build a new $15 million plant in Shakopee. Trystar specializes in products that provide temporary power at construction sites and major sporting events. The Northfield News reports the manufacturing company has doubled in size each of the last three years. Trystar's new facility will be three times the size of its current 60,000 square foot space. The current lease keeps the company in Faribault through at least 2015.

The Star Tribune reports the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community and the Canterbury Park horse-racing track have reached a 10-year agreement. The deal calls for the tribe, which operates the nearby Mystic Lake Casino, to contribute tens of millions of dollars to Canterbury purses. In exchange, owners of the racetrack in Shakopee agree to end their pursuit to add slot machines and help block efforts to expand gambling in the Twin Cities metro area.

The new parent company of Fashion Bug is closing the 600 remaining stores by early 2013, including locations in Apple Valley, Brooklyn Park, Coon Rapids, Elk River, Hudson and Shakopee. Last year, 124 Fashion Bug stores were closed.

Sears has confirmed that it will close its Kmart Distribution Center in Shakopee at the beginning of 2013. A company spokeswoman said that the 130 workers affected by the shut down were informed last week that they were losing their jobs. Some of the workers have reportedly been with the distribution center since it opened in 1981.

Despite opposition from neighbors, the city agreed to a $5.4 million state allocation to put a fence around the women's prison in Shakopee. According to the Star Tribune, Warden Tracy Beltz says the design is "more decorative and stately, with wrought iron and brick columns."
