Storm to dump up to 1 foot of snow; 3-5 inches in Twin Cities

Author:

A winter storm sweeping into Minnesota is expected to dump snow in a broad diagonal swath across the state from the southwest to the northeast, dropping up to a foot of snow in St. Cloud and several inches in the Twin Cities.

The storm is now expected to extend from Tuesday through the early morning hours Wednesday. Snow was falling early Tuesday morning in St. Cloud and several schools had already closed, the St. Cloud Times reports.

The National Weather Service says the storm will arrive in the metro Tuesday in the late afternoon/early evening – later than initially expected:

Here are updated snow total predictions from the Weather Service:

A Star Tribune forecast Tuesday morning calls for 6 inches in Marshall in the southwest; 10 inches in Duluth; and 4.5 inches in the metro by the time it's over. WCCO is forecasting 3-6 inches in the metro. Afternoon commuters in the Twin Cities could see some precipitation, WCCO says.

KARE 11 calls for 2-4 inches of snow in the Twin Cities, with steady precipitation starting from about 6 to 9 p.m. – a wintry mix turning to wet snow.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning through Wednesday for an area that extends from west-central and central Minnesota into the northeast.

The warning area includes Marshall to Granite Falls through Willmar, St. Cloud, Long Prairie, Alexandria and into the Duluth area. The weather service predicts heavy snowfall totals in northeastern Minnesota, where 10-12 inches are possible.

High temperatures are expected to be in the 30s in most of the state Tuesday, WCCO says:
