A man has been charged with sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl in the hallway of an apartment complex in Minneapolis over the weekend.
Ahmed Hersi Abdi, 34, of Park Avenue, Minneapolis, has been charged with two counts of 1st degree criminal sexual conduct with a person under the age of 13 following an incident at the Riverside Plaza apartment complex in Cedar Riverside on Sunday.
According to the criminal complaint, local residents flagged down officers outside the complex at 1601 S. 4th St. after hearing screams coming from the third floor hallway and found a young girl crying, saying a man had "pulled her pants down and did something to her."
The traumatized 10-year-old then spoke with police, telling them a stranger had followed her onto the elevator and followed her off, asking for her name.
He then extended his hand to her and when she shook it, he refused to let go, at which point he ordered her not to move and proceeded to sexually assault her.
It didn't take long for police to arrest the suspect. They found surveillance footage from the building showing the suspect and the victim entering the elevator.
Abdi was apprehended in St. Paul on Monday, wearing the same clothes as he was in the surveillance video.
His bail has been set at $500,000 and he is due to have his first court appearance Wednesday.
