Workers authorize strike affecting 8 hospitals
Unionized health care workers have voted to authorize a strike against hospitals operated by five health systems in the Twin Cities, but the tally doesn't necessarily mean a strike will occur. If the union ultimately calls a two- to five-day strike, it would affect eight hospitals in the metro area. The union would have to give hospitals at least 10 days' notice of a strike.
Injuries averted in St. Paul train derailment
A Union Pacific train derailed in St. Paul Saturday under the Seventh Street Bridge near Interstate 94, according to St. Paul Police. Authorities said no injuries were sustained in the derailment, and no hazardous materials were stored in any of the train cars.
Local hospital workers voting on possible strike
As many as 3,500 union members are voting today and tomorrow on a strike that would last between two and five days, WCCO reports. Union reps for the SEIU say local hospital workers are facing severe cuts. The workers’ contracts expired at the end of February.
Met Council to try temporary fee cut on NorthStar Commuter line
With ridership numbers not living up to expectations, the Met Council said Wednesday that it's cutting fees on the NorthStar commuter rail line. Starting Aug. 1, the NorthStar -- which travels between the Twin Cities and Big Lake -- will charge $6 instead of $7 for weekday rush hour patrons. The reduced fee experiment will be evaluated in nine months.
Lightning strike injures 8 at Duluth beach
Eight people have been injured -- at least four seriously -- following a lightning strike at Lake Superior beach in Duluth Saturday night. Authorities say a 9-year-old boy is in "very serious" condition and at least three adults are also seriously hurt and have been hospitalized.
