Catherine Loahr, of Forest Lake, was crossing Highway 97 around 1:20 p.m. when she was hit by a Jeep Grand Cherokee that was turning onto the highway from Goodview Avenue, the State Patrol incident report says.

Loahr was leaving summer school at Century Jr. High School on Goodview Avenue when she was hit, FOX 9 reports.

“It was terrible," Kalyn Windingstad, a student who was on a bus when she saw Loahr lying in the road, told WCCO. "There was a white van that stopped and a girl was trying to help her, her friend was on the side just panicking and crying.”

The school district has made counselors available for students following the incident, according to reports.

The 65-year-old driver of the Jeep did not appear to be injured, the State Patrol's report notes.

The incident remains under investigation.

Preliminary reports show there have been 20 pedestrian fatalities on Minnesota roads this year, Scott Wasserman, a public information officer with the Department of Public Safety, told BringMeTheNews. At this time last year, there were 13.

The Minnesota Department of Public safety urges motorists to pay attention and watch for pedestrians, but also asks pedestrians to be safe and smart when crossing the road – make sure motorists see you before you walk into the street, Donna Berger, with the Office of Traffic Safety, told BringMeTheNews earlier this year.
