A revamped version of the General Educational Development (GED) exam has some students busily working to take the test so they won't have to start over with preparations when a new test comes online in January of 2014.

The St. Cloud Times reported that education officials are seeing a rush of adults working to earn the certificate by year's end so they won't have to pass a more rigorous computerized test.

Scott Wallner, assistant community education director with St. Cloud schools, said about 100 people take the test in the district each year. He's expecting 250 to 275 before the end of this year.

The newspaper reported there are more than 9,500 adults in the area surrounding St. Cloud area who don't have a high school diploma. Wallner said many don’t have the computer skills necessary for taking the updated GED.

“The fact that it’s going to be computerized may require a whole new set of skills that the paper-pencil tests hadn’t,” Wallner said. “We’re offering introduction-to-computer classes because we know that is going to be a problem for some.”
