Minnetonka students are coming together to remember one of their own who was killed Wednesday morning while crossing the street near the high school.

Scott Berzins, 17, was crossing Highway 7 – not in a crosswalk or intersection – around 6:18 a.m. when he was hit in the left lane on the westbound side near Minnetonka High School and Highway 101, according to the State Patrol's report.

Principal Jeff Erickson said Berzins was a "friendly, talkative young man," who was caring and passionate about music, according to the Star Tribune. He played the saxophone and the guitar in the jazz band, the paper says.

Erickson also sent an email home to students' families, saying staff will be available for people who need to talk about what happened, KARE 11 says, and provided a link to tips for students to deal with grief.

Purple for Berzins

Students at Minnetonka planned to wear purple Thursday to honor their classmate. WCCO says purple was Berzins' favorite color.

The Minnetonka Band Boosters Facebook page also changed its cover photo to purple. And at least one other nearby high school planned to honor the Minnetonka senior Thursday. A fan account for the Eden Prairie Eagles tweeted a reminder to wear purple for Berzins.

Others have shared their condolences for Berzins' family and the Minnetonka community on social media using the hashtag #TonkaStrong and #WeAreOne.
