Watch out for deer if you're driving in Minnesota. A study by State Farm Insurance company says Minnesota drivers are more likely to hit deer this year than last year.

According to data, Minnesota is considered a "high risk" state for deer collisions. In fact, it's ranked the seventh highest in the U.S. behind West Virginia, Montana, Pennsylvania, Iowa, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Drivers have a 1 in 80 chance of hitting a deer this year. That's up 1.3 percent from last year.

We're also approaching the months where most deer-vehicle collisions occur.

State Farm says most crashes involving deer, elk or moose happen in November. That's followed by October and December.

According to State Farm, that has a lot to do with the mating season.

Counties with the most collisions

The state Department of Public Safety has a list of where all the reported deer collisions happened in 2015.

According to the information, Dakota County had the most deer collisions with 158 reported.

Hennepin and Stearns counties followed with 146 and 133 collisions respectively.

Altogether in the state, there were 2,141 crashes involving deer. Six people died as a result.

Tips to avoid hitting deer

State Farm recommends being extra careful driving, especially between October and December.

Keep your eyes on the road, and slow down – particularly at dusk and dawn.

If you come across one deer, expect to encounter more.

State Farm says that if you encounter a deer on the road, it's best to hit the breaks. Don't swerve because that could cause an even worse crash, especially if you swerve into oncoming traffic.

And, of course, always buckle up.
