Sun Country is naming all of its planes after Minnesota lakes

There's artwork to go along with them.

Every Sun Country airplane is going to be named after a Minnesota lake.

The Mendota Heights-based airline announced its Hometown Lakes Project Tuesday, noting its 22 planes will feature custom lake-themed art by local artist Mark Herman.

"Sun Country Airlines is Minnesota’s hometown airline and in Minnesota, our lakes are part of our DNA. We want to honor the bodies of water synonymous with the Minnesota lifestyle, and are thrilled to unveil the Hometown Lakes Project," Zarir Erani, Sun Country Airlines President and CEO said in a statement.

The first plane was unveiled Thursday – it's named after Lake Bemidji. The name of the lake is on both sides of the plane, and inside the aircraft there's art featuring the lake's Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox attraction (see image below).

The rest of the artwork will be rolled out to the rest of Sun Country's fleet over the next several months. As each plan gets its new name, you can follow along on Twitter by following the hashtag #HometownLakesProjectSun Country says it'll donate $1 (up to $1,000) to Conservation Minnesota for every tweet that uses the hashtag on April 11.

The other lakes that'll be included are:

  • Lake Winona
  • Lake Vermilion
  • Lake Superior
  • Lake of the Woods
  • Lake Minnetonka
  • Lake Mille Lacs
  • Lake of the Isles
  • Lake Jefferson
  • Lake Hiawatha
  • Lake Harriet
  • Lake Geneva
  • Lake George
  • Lake Hubert
  • Lake Independence
  • Lake Irving
  • Lake of the Clouds
  • Lake Minnewashta
  • Lake Nokomis
  • Lake Pepin
  • Lake Virginia

And Sun Country plans to add Lake Como, Lake Phalen and Lake Ripley once the airline grows its fleet.

You can see the artwork for each plane here, and Sun Country is selling it online in the Sun Country store.
