Sunday Mississippi River vigil honors memory of Barway Collins

While Pierre Collins – charged in the murder of his son, Barway – is in the spotlight amid legal proceedings, the community gathered Sunday afternoon to remember the 10-year-old boy in a solemn ceremony on the Mississippi River.

Many of the volunteers who helped search for Barway in the weeks after his disappearance came together for a vigil in North Mississippi Regional Park, WCCO reports.

Hundreds of participants released white roses into the river as a symbol of remembrance, FOX 9 reports.

The boy's body was found in the Mississippi earlier this month.

It's the second vigil this weekend – on Saturday, a crowd of more than 200 mourners gathered at the Crystal, Minnesota apartment complex where Barway lived.

A statement on the organizers' Facebook page said the event paid tribute to the boy's "innocence, his exuberance, his irresistible smiles, and his being a child full of so much life."

Meanwhile, Barway's father continues to maintain his innocence. Police say they have video and cell phone evidence placing him in an area of the Mississippi the day his son went missing.

It was the same area where searchers later discovered the boy's body.

Records show Pierre Collins had a host of financial and fraud problems at the time of his son's disappearance.

He is charged in Hennepin County with second-degree murder.

A funeral is scheduled for Saturday morning at Shiloh Temple in Minneapolis.
