Surge of overdoses in Duluth apparently from more potent heroin

Police in Duluth responded to three weekend drug overdoses, all apparently the result of heroin use.

A similar case just over a week ago brings to four the number of Dulutians recently treated at hospitals for apparent heroin overdoses.

It prompted the police department to issue a statement that reads in part: "Similar reports of overdoses and increased heroin potency continue to occur state and nationwide."

The busy weekend bore similarities to one last July, when Duluth police responded to four overdoses in three days. Unlike this past weekend, July's overdoses involved one fatality.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Lake Superior Drug and Violent Crime Task Force at 218-730-5750.
