Tackle shops, anglers frustrated with Mother Nature

Businesses that rely on anglers are getting skunked this fishing season. Our stretch of dreary spring weather is taking a big bite out of profits.

The owner of a St. Croix Falls bait and tackle shop told WCCO that sales are down 85 percent.

“The frustrating part is you never get it back, that’s the unfortunate part,” store manager Todd Angel said. “We’ve been here 17 years, been in business 28, and I’ve never seen anything like this. Even our customers that are 70, 80 years old, I quiz them to see if they’ve ever seen anything like it, and they haven’t.”

Meanwhile, the Duluth News Tribune reported there's a shortage of spottail shiner minnows across north-central Minnesota because of the late thaw and a ban on harvesting spottails from Lake Winnibigoshish.
