Activists from Minneapolis, St. Paul plan MLK Day protests

Protestors will brave the bitter cold Monday afternoon in an effort to bring attention to a pair of officer-involved shootings that killed Jamar Clark in November and Marcus Golden last January.

The activists are calling the dual protests a "Tale of Two Cities." One group will meet at Lake Street and 4th Avenue S. in Minneapolis while another group gathers at Marshall and Otis avenues in St. Paul – they'll then march and meet in the middle on the Mississippi River Bridge at Lake Street and Marshall Avenue.

The Twin Cities Coalition for Justice 4 Jamar posted on its Facebook page:

"On this MLK Day march with brothers and sisters from St. Paul and Minneapolis to demand that Marcus Golden’s case in St. Paul be reopened by authorities there, and that in Minneapolis the police who killed Jamar Clark be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law by Hennepin County prosecutor Mike Freeman without a grand jury.

"The idea of the march (Tale of Two Cities) is to pull together both cities Minneapolis and St Paul that are only divided by the river but share the same kinds of injustices, inequities including MLK was no mere dreamer he stood up for the rights of all human beings in the US and elsewhere. "

The protest is not the product of Black Lives Matter Minneapolis, a spokesperson for the group told the Star Tribune.

Golden was killed last January and the officers involved were not charged, the Pioneer Press notes.

Black Lives Matter Minneapolis protested at Mall of America and the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport two days before Christmas – the busiest shopping day of the year – in an earlier effort to get officials to release the tape of the shooting involving Clark. The tape remains under wraps until an investigation is complete.
