Following reports on Friday, Target Corp. is officially joining several other major retailers, including its Arkansas-based rival Wal-Mart Stores Inc., that are kicking off the holiday shopping season on Thanksgiving, the Star Tribune reports. Minneapolis-based Target stores will open its doors at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 22 -- three hours earlier than a year ago.

The Minneapolis-based discount chain opened its first CityTarget stores in Chicago, Los Angeles and Seattle on Wednesday. The new slimmed-down format is designed to cater to urban shoppers, while still featuring fresh food, apparel and electronics.

The city's Planning Commission voted 7-0 to reject the retailer's proposal after hundreds of people showed up to speak out against the plan. Commissioners say the store hasn't addressed concerns about traffic, parking and a nearby wetland. The company says it will address those issues before the City Council votes later this month.
