Teen charged with murder over shooting death of his girlfriend

When Ahmed Abdi returns to Minnesota from Kansas City, Missouri, he'll answer to murder charges in connection with the shooting death of 21-year-old Ayan Abdulahi.

The 17-year-old has been charged with one count of second-degree murder, according to a press release from the office of Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman.

Abdi evaded authorities for nearly two weeks after the incident in south Minneapolis until he was picked up in Missouri on April 24, court documents say.

The charges indicate the shooting took place in Abdi's home in Portland Ave. S. last month, and that the victim was found in the suspect's bedroom with a gunshot wound to her head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The documents describe Abdi and Abdulahi as having had a "boyfriend/girlfriend" relationship.

Neighbors and a source "familiar with the investigation" said the incident was related to a domestic dispute, the Star Tribune reports.

Authorities are now working to transport Abdi from Kansas City to Minnesota, according to the release, which also indicates that prosecutors will push to have him tried as an adult.
