According to a statement from the sheriff's office, the 17-year-old victim called 911 around 10 p.m. Monday, and said she was shot several times while standing on the deck of her Eckles Township home. Deputies responded and found the girl inside the door to her residence, and began treating her. She was taken to a hospital in Bemidji, stabilized, then transported to Duluth.
Authorities immediately began searching the neighborhood, the sheriff's office says, and within minutes located the 40-year-old suspect two blocks away in his residence. He was arrested and taken to Beltrami County Jail. As of Tuesday afternoon he had not yet been charged with a crime.
The sheriff's office says they believe the suspect acted alone, and there is no continuing danger to the community. Eckles Township is a 34-square-mile area just northwest of Bemidji, with a population of about 1,500 as of 2012.
