Thanks, George and Abe: Presidents Day is the new Black Friday

You have plenty of presidents in your wallet, and a new survey suggests you can keep more of them there by shopping on the day set aside to honor our commanders in chief.

Forbes magazine reports that recently released information suggests that bargain shoppers may land better deals on Presidents Day than on Black Friday. Better yet, for anyone who would rather not slog through the snow to get to the mall, most of the savings are available from the comfort of a home laptop.

FOX 9 carried a story from the personal shopping site Shop It To Me, which reviewed more than 1 million sale items available from Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2013. The analysis found Presidents Day was the best holiday to buy, with an average discount of 47 percent off on the Monday federal holiday. Black Friday online retail sales averaged 44 percent off.

Shoppers seeking Presidents Day deals are advised to scour e-commerce sites for discount codes that are often not immediately obvious. Shop It To Me has gathered these codes for retailers Tory Burch, J. Crew, and Diane von Furstenburg.

The International Business Times said there are loads of Presidents Day markdowns on the coupon site that offer discounts of 20-80 percent. Many of the sites have discount codes for additional savings or free shipping online on top of the Presidents Day discounts.

So – what are you doing reading this post when you could be shopping?
