The 41 people arrested after blocking traffic and sitting on a major Minneapolis highway during rush hour Wednesday are now charged with misdemeanors.

The protesters were part of a non-black allies movement called “Wake Your Ass Up Collective” and were demonstrating in response to the recent killings of black men by police, including Philando Castile on July 6, a news release says.

They blocked Interstate 35W at the entrance to the Mississippi River Bridge around 7:45 a.m., backing up traffic for miles and blocking anyone from passing for nearly two hours.

In the end, 41 people were arrested and booked in Hennepin County Jail.

On Wednesday, they were all charged with public nuisance and unlawful assembly, according to City of Minneapolis spokesperson Casper Hill.

Bail was set at $78 – if a suspect posted bail, they'll be in court on July 27; if they did not, they'll be in court Friday afternoon, Hill said.

Black Lives Matter Minneapolis has been raising money to help the people arrested pay their bail. For information on how to donate, click here.

There's no specific punishment laid out for public nuisance or unlawful assembly.

This is the second time in less than a week people have been arrested and charged in connection to blocking a Twin Cities interstate. Forty-six adults were arrested and charged with third-degree riot following a protest on Interstate 94 over the weekend.
