State records 1st West Nile case of the season

Minnesota has recorded its first case of West Nile, the mosquito-borne virus that can cause flu-like symptoms and can be – in very rare cases – fatal. The Minnesota Health Department has confirmed that a Pope County woman became sick Aug. 2 with West Nile fever, but she did not require hospitalization.

Snowy owl who flew to attention after surviving a collision has died

A snowy owl that came to Minnesota for treatment after being hit by a bus in Washington, D.C. last January has died. The University of Minnesota's Raptor Center in St. Paul announced the owl's passing on its website, saying the owl was found dead on the side of a Minnesota highway not far from where he had been released last spring.
