The 8-year-old boy critically injured when a snowmobile hit him on a Minnesota lake has died.

The father of Alan Geisenkoetter Jr. confirmed in a post on Caring Bridge on Wednesday that the 8-year-old had died from the injuries he suffered on the evening of Friday, Jan. 26.

He was watching his father put up an ice house on Chisago Lake when a snowmobile driven by a man who had been drinking crashed into them.

– Ice deaths in Minnesota are at the highest level in years.

Alan Jr. was critically injured, suffering head trauma and leg fractures that required an airlift to the hospital for treatment.

His father Alan Geisenkoetter Sr. said the damage done in the collision was far worse than initially thought.

"Most of his brain was damaged," he wrote. "There was never a day we thought we would have to make a decision like this, the hardest decision we've ever made. Little Alan got his angel wings today."

A GoFundMe page set up up help Alan Jr. recover from his injuries was set up in the aftermath of the incident and has so far raised more than $30,000.

What happened?

The Geisenkoetter family went out ice fishing on the evening of Jan. 26, and had just moved onto Chisago Lake when the incident happened.

Geisenkoetter Sr. was setting up their portable ice house while his wife and daughter stayed in the truck.

Alan was out of the vehicle, watching his dad set up the house, when a man fishing nearby started up his snowmobile.

According to Caring Bridge, "Alan Jr. had recently been obsessed with snowmobiles and went to the back of their truck to see it as it went by."

The family then realized the snowmobile was moving towards them at a fast pace, and "before anyone knew what was happening" it grazed the back of the truck, struck Alan Jr. and then smashed into the ice house his father was setting up.

The snowmobile driver refused to give a breath test to police at the time, though he admitted he had been drinking alcohol prior to the crash.

Police later obtained a warrant to take a blood test and later confirmed that 45-year-old Eric Joseph Coleman had been charged with a DWI.

KSTP reports that he had previously had his license revoked on three occasions for alcohol-related offenses.
