The Interstate 35W Bridge in Minneapolis will glow blue tonight.

Gov. Mark Dayton declared Monday Law Enforcement Appreciation Day in Minnesota to honor the more than 10,000 law enforcement officials in the state who risk their lives every day to keep people safe.

And to honor them, Dayton asked the Minnesota Department of Transportation to turn the LED lights on the I-35W bridge blue. The lights at the Governor's Residence in St. Paul will also be lit blue Monday.

"Today, we recognize the service and sacrifice of those brave men and women, and their families. Minnesota is a safer, stronger, better state thanks to their unwavering service," Dayton said in a news release.

"The brave men and women in law enforcement understand they take risks every day to protect the rest of us," Lt. Gov. Tina Smith said in the release. "Today and every day, let us pause to recognize and thank them for their courage, dedication, and professionalism."

No Minnesota officers were killed in the line of duty in 2016, but 138 officers nationwide were killed while doing their jobs last year, the proclamation says.

The I-35W Bridge is often lit in different colors to mark certain events, for example it was red, white and blue on New Year's Day and was rainbow colored for Twin Cities Pride. Groups can also apply to have the bridge lit for their specific organization.
