The MN company that made Bundt cakes a thing gets honored for its anniversary


Nordic Ware is 70 years old.

If the name of the company doesn't ring a bell, it's signature product might jog your memory – or your taste buds.

St. Louis Park company Nordic Ware helped popularize the Bundt cake with the creation of the Bundt pan in 1964 – the first O-shaped, non-stick cake pan.

In honor of the Minnesota staple, Gov. Mark Dayton declared Jan. 11 "Nordic Ware Day."

The proclamation notes Nordic Ware employs more than 250 Minnesotans, after starting as a "small business selling Scandinavian kitchenware" that's since grown to include more than 400 products.

As for the Bundt pan, Dayton's proclamation says it's "something Minnesotans are deeply proud of," saying more than 70 million American homes own the item.

The cookware company is still going strong, having expanded in 2009, a time when not many businesses were expanding.

In September, Minnesota Business Magazine named Nordic Ware a sustainability winner.

To celebrate 70 years, Nordic Ware is hosting a photo competition through its Facebook page.
