The most popular dog breeds in Minnesota last year

The lab took the top spot – again.

People really love their labs.

For the 26th year in a row, the Labrador retriever was named the most popular dog breed in the country by the American Kennel Club (AKC) for 2016. The group says the breed makes an ideal family pet because of its temperament. They also make good sporting dogs and K-9 partners, the AKC says.

Labs were also the top dog breed in the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington area in 2016, a spokesperson for AKC told GoMN.

Here were the top 10 breeds in the Twin Cities:

  1. Labrador retriever
  2. Golden retriever
  3. German shepherd
  4. German shorthaired pointer
  5. English springer spaniel
  6. Poodle
  7. Bulldog
  8. Siberian husky
  9. French bulldog
  10. Boxer

The list is slightly different from the top breeds nationally, with a few that are popular in Minnesota not even making the national list. That includes the English springer spaniel, German shorthaired pointer, and Siberian husky.

The top 10 breeds in the U.S. were:

  1. Labrador retriever
  2. German shepherd
  3. Golden retriever
  4. Bulldog
  5. Beagle
  6. French bulldog
  7. Poodle
  8. Rottweiler
  9. Yorkshire terrier
  10. Boxer

The top dog breeds nationally have stayed pretty consistent over the years. Labs, German shepherds, golden retrievers, bulldogs and beagles have made the top five for the past four years.

But AKC Vice President Gina DiNardo says some other breeds are moving up the list, including the Rottweiler, which came in at No. 8 this year – the highest since it took the No. 2 spot back in 1994.

The Rottweiler didn't even make the top 10 in Minnesota though.
