Girl scouts, youth sports teams, neighbors and members of numerous congregations were among the volunteers who joined in a community-wide effort in Woodbury to pack 4 million meals for the nonprofit Feed My Starving Children.
They achieved the goal Sunday evening.
Some 20,000 volunteers donned hair nets and worked in shifts worked over the course of four days, taking over the Bielenberg Sports Center to accommodate all the scoopers, packers, labelers and runners.
FOX 9 reported 10 percent of the money raised through the community project will stay in the local community, assisting the Christian Cupboard Emergency Food Shelf in Woodbury. The rest will go towards feeding hungry mouths around the globe.
The Pioneer Press reported the marathon was the largest such event ever sponsored by the Coon Rapids-based nonprofit.
