It seems we're most likely to hear about those wrestling with addiction when they wind up on the police blotter.

But there are plenty of people all around us who have the upper hand on their addictions and are making valuable contributions to society every day.

Those folks are getting a celebratory day in the sun Saturday when Faribault holds its first RecoveryFest.

Besides games, free food, and live music organizers hope there will also be conversation – and perhaps talking about it will help break down some of the stigma around addiction and recovery.

“Recovering people are not third-world citizens,” Jeff Jarvis tells the Faribault Daily News. “We operate mostly anonymously, but we make daily contributions on every level of society."

The Daily News reports Jarvis, who works for the city's Parks and Recreation department, is one of the lead organizers of Faribault's event – one of a handful planned in Minnesota during National Recovery Month (find a calendar of events here).

Actually its full name is "National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month." In his proclamation, President Obama wrote:

"Throughout this month, we celebrate the successes of all those who know the transformative power of recovery, and we renew our commitment to providing the support, care, and treatment that people need to forge a healthier life."

St. Paul is also having a Recovery Fest on Saturday, hosted by The Recovery Church on the city's west side.

In Rochester, recovery is the impetus for a barbecue cook-off in Silver Lake Park creatively called "Smokin' Meat, Not Drugs."

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has lots of resources and information about Recovery Month here and also offers a treatment finder to locate help near you.
