Third teacher added in Shattuck-St. Mary's sex abuse probe
A former teacher has been charged with multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor after police say he engaged in sex acts with a student while he worked at Shattuck-St. Mary's, according to the Fairbault Daily News .
Joseph Carl Machlitt, 63, of St. Paul, is in the Rice County jail. He has been charged with third- and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct. The criminal complaint filed in Rice County District Court, said the victim, who was 14 at the time, said Machlitt performed oral sex on him and also touched him inappropriately.
KMSP reports that Machlitt admitted to having a sexual relationship with the victim. When interviewed by police, he said he thought that they had two sexual encounters. Detectives identified at least one other student victim of Machlitt.
A press release issued by former Intertim Faribault Police Chief Don Gudmundson said the victim, who is now 46, came forward following the charges of criminal sexual conduct filed against Lynn Seibel, a former teacher at the Faribault private school. Now 70, Seibel worked at Shattuck-St. Mary's from 1992 to 2003. In addition to working as a drama instructor, he also served as a dorm parent. He is in custody at the Los Angeles Jail and is scheduled to appear in court later this month on possession of child porn charges
At the same time Seibel was charged, Faribault Police also released information about an investigation into the 2008 death of Len Jones, a history teacher and lacrosse coach at Shattuck-St. Mary's. He committed suicide after school officials confronted him about an inappropriate relationship with a foreign student.
