This is just weird: Thunder and lightning in Minnesota – in February

Thunder, lightning and some hail has been reported.

Minnesota is in line to get some thunderstorms Monday.

Yes, on Feb. 20, there are thunderstorms in the forecast.

There's no risk for anything severe, but you'll probably hear some claps of thunder and see some lightning, meteorologist Paul Huttner wrote on MPR News' Updraft blog. Dime-sized hail was reported in Detroit Lakes Monday morning as well.

Eastern Minnesota could pick up three-quarters of an inch of rain, while the western part of the state will see about a quarter-inch of rain or less, the National Weather Service says.

Here's a look at the timing of today's rain:

Thunderstorms in February – that's just plain weird. But, it goes along with the abnormal weather we've been having this month – like on Friday, when we shattered a bunch of high temperature records.

Sunshine returns Tuesday, and the record-breaking warmth we've been having is expected to continue through Wednesday. the National Weather Service says. Temperatures will be in the 50s and low 60s in southern Minnesota, with the Northland will see temps in the 40s and 50s – this is about 20-30 degrees above average for this time of year.

But, it is Minnesota after all – and the winter storm mention in the forecast last week is still on track to hit Minnesota, the National Weather Service says. There's still a bunch of uncertainty, but right now the forecast shows rain, snow and wind possible for southeastern Minnesota Thursday night into Friday.

We'll keep you updated over the next few days as details about where all the heavy snow will fall become more clear.
