Power restored for almost everyone following storms, power companies say

Power has been restored for nearly everyone after lightning, heavy rain and fierce winds downed power lines across the metro late Friday night.

Xcel Energy had restored power to 99 percent of customers by Sunday night, the company wrote on Facebook, after nearly 250,000 customers lost power in the storm.

In a 2 p.m. update, Xcel said it expects to restore power to the remaining 800 customers by midday Monday, so long as they didn't suffer any "mast damages" in the storm – if there is damage to the mast, customers are instructed to contact a licensed electrician to make repairs before power can be restored, Xcel Energy notes.

The company is asking anyone who is still without power to report their outage by calling 1-800-895-1999.

Xcel Energy had 750 workers, including crews from as far away as Colorado and Wisconsin, respond in an effort to restore power in the days following the storm.

Trees and other debris

Meanwhile, other crews around the metro attended to another casualty of the storm – trees, thousands of which may have been lost, and whose branches blocked streets and damaged property.

A Minneapolis Public Works employee told the Star Tribune Sunday that parts of south Minneapolis were still "a mess" as residents reported trees were still in the street, while officials in St. Paul said most streets were cleared of debris to make them passable.

But the storm was especially severe west of the Twin Cities in the Carver County city of Watertown, where National Weather Service officials say an EF-1 tornado touched down during Friday night's storm.

MPR News reports the twister reached speeds of 105 mph, destroyed an outbuilding and tore a roof off a house, as well as knocked out power for thousands and left a trail of debris in its path.

Brainerd area

Residents in the Brainerd Lakes area continue to cleanup after storms devastated the area more than a week ago.

Minnesota Power, which services much of the area, posted on Facebook Monday afternoon that all known outages in the area have been repaired, and anyone who is still without power should call the company at 1-800-307-6937.
