Three injured in 3M plant explosion in Hutchinson

It was reportedly caused by a malfunctioning piece of equipment.

Three people were hurt in an explosion at 3M's sprawling manufacturing site in Hutchinson, Minnesota.

The Thursday afternoon incident happened when a piece of equipment had a "process upset its cooling process," 3M told BMTN, describing it as a "small incident."

There was no structural damage to the facility, but three people were hurt as a result.

One of them has serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and was taken to a local medical center by ambulance before being airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center.

Two others suffered minor injuries.

Hutchinson is Maplewood-based 3M's biggest plant in the country, and it manufactures a huge range of its product line including for brands like Scotch, Post-It, and various other tapes, films and adhesives.

Hutchinson Police Chief Dan Hatten told the Hutchinson Leader he wasn't aware of any risk of chemical exposure as a result of the explosion.
