Three Minnesota members of Congress back impeaching President Trump

But the motion didn't make it past the house.

The Essentials

1. On Wednesday, the U.S. House was forced into a vote by Texas congressman Al Green on whether they should table (shelve, sideline etc.) his calls for the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

2. The vote to table passed 364-58, meaning 58 Democrats wanted to proceed with articles of impeachment against Trump.

3. Those in favor included three Minnesota members of Congress: Reps. Betty McCollum, Keith Ellison and Tim Walz.

The Big Picture

It was the first attempted vote on the impeachment of the president since Trump took office, and it failed comprehensively.

Had the House voted against tabling the motion to impeach the president, it would have gone to the House Judiciary Committee for further discussion.

But unsurprisingly in the Republican-controlled House, representatives voted to sideline impeachment proceedings. Many Democrats, including Minnesota Reps. Rick Nolan and Collin Peterson, also voted this way.

Rep. McCollum meanwhile told GoMN why she wanted to see impeachment proceedings taken to the next stage.

"Like most Americans, I have been very concerned by President Trump’s conduct in office," she said. "I believe our nation would have been best served by sending this resolution to the House Judiciary Committee where the important issues raised in it could have been considered and debated. That’s why I voted not to table the resolution."

Rather than being about the Russia investigation, Green's impeachment articles focus on Trump's statements and actions relating to the racial protests and violence in Charlottesville. They also call out the president's comments about NFL national anthem protests, and his recent retweets of a British far-right nationalist group.

Nancy Pelosi and minority whip Steny Hoyer, who also voted to table the motion, said they should let the Special Counsel and congressional inquiries into Russian election interference run their course first, NPR reports

CNN also noted that most of the Democrats who voted in favor of impeachment tended to be in safe Democratic districts.
