Toddler falls from 3rd-story window, suffers a broken jaw

A toddler fell from a third-story window Monday afternoon and broke his jaw.

The 18-month-old boy had been taking a nap in his room when he crawled to the window, slid it open and pushed out the screen, police said, according to the St. Cloud Times.

One of the boy's parents saw the toddler on the ground, and a passerby called 911.

The child was crying and responsive when officials arrived, WCCO says. He was transported to St. Cloud Hospital, where he has since been moved out of intensive care, the St. Cloud Times notes.

Police believe the fall was an accident, KNSI Radio says.

Falls from windows

About eight children under the age of 5 die every year from falling out of windows, and more than 3,300 suffer injuries that require a trip to the hospital, Safe Kids Worldwide report says.

Since 2010, 127 children have died in the U.S. from fall-related injuries, Safe Kids Worldwide notes.

The National Safety Council has tips to help protect children around windows, including keeping windows closed and locked when children are present; keeping furniture away from windows so children can't reach them; and installing fall-prevention devices that limit how far windows can open.
