Toddler fatally shot in Mpls. buried as father is arrested

On the same day that 2-year-old Le'Vonte King Jason Jones was buried, his father was jailed and charged.

Jones was killed last week in north Minneapolis in a drive-by shooting.

KARE 11 says 25-year-old Melvonte Lee Peterson of Brooklyn Center had been driving near Penn and Lowry avenues when shots were fired at his vehicle.

Two-year-old Jones and his 15-month-old sister were in the vehicle at the time. Both were struck by bullets.

The station adds that Peterson proceeded to fire shots from his own weapon, hitting a nearby hardware store.

Then Peterson rushed the children to North Memorial Medical Center, the Star Tribune reports. The toddler died, and his younger sister was treated for her injuries.

Peterson has been charged in connection with the shooting. Additionally, he faces a charge of possessing a firearm. That's because he has previous convictions that make it a crime for him to have one, Fox 9 says.

Peterson's being held on a $500,000 bail.

Police are still looking for the second shooter.

The funeral

Jones' funeral comes the day after Philando Castile's.

Complete with a horse-drawn carriage, the service at Bethel Christian Fellowship church in St. Paul was attended by hundreds of people who came to remember the toddler.

There's a GoFundMe page to help the family with costs.
