His dad was operating the mower at the time.

A 2-year-old boy is in the hospital with a severe leg injury after being accidentally run over by a riding lawnmower operated by his father.

The Morrison County Sheriff's Office said it happened at a home in Great River Road in Swan River Township at 5:26 p.m. on Tuesday. The boy was then airlifted to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale.

The child was riding on the back of the zero-turn mower, which his 32-year-old father was operating, when he fell off as his dad made a turn.

The mower went over the boy while the blades were engaged.

Lawn mowers injure hundreds of kids each year

Around 800 children every year in the U.S. are run over by riding mowers or small tractors, and more than 600 of these result in amputation, according to the Amputee Coalition.

Riding mowers are particularly dangerous because of the chance they could tip over.

When taking into account push-mowers, the Consumer Product Safety Commission says 12,000 children and 274,000 adults were injured by lawn mowers in 2015.

For children, boys sustain 80 percent of the injuries, which mostly occur to arms and hands.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says children under the age of 12 shouldn't operate a push mower, and those under the age of 16 shouldn't operate a riding mower.

They also advise wearing sturdy shoes while mowing, and picking up any stones, toys or other objects from the lawn before beginning, to prevent injuries from flying objects.
