Republican Tom Emmer on Wednesday is planning to make an announcement about his political future in his hometown of Delano, Minn.
Emmer on WCCO on Sunday said he is "strongly considering" mounting a campaign for the Sixth District Congressional seat now held by Republican Michele Bachmann. KSTP says it is "likely" Emmer will announce his bid.
Emmer lost a close gubernatorial race to DFL Gov. Mark Dayton in 2010, who scraped out a win by 0.4 points – 43.6 to 43.2 percent. Emmer conceded after a recount. Emmer is a morning radio talk show host on 1130 AM.
In two surprise moves last week, Bachmann announced that she would not seek a fifth term. Then just a few days later, her DFL challenger, Jim Graves, announced that he was suspending his campaign.
Emmer is believed to be just one of a number of Republicans likely mulling whether to join the race. On Monday, state Sen. Michelle Benson of Ham Lake said she wouldn't run, the Star Tribune reported.
