Tough news for the Minnesota Twins Saturday with the announcement of Trevor May's season-ending injury.

May was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, likely meaning Tommy John surgery is necessary.

May was competing for a spot in the starting rotation and had just pitched a pretty solid 3 2/3 innings when the Twins beat team USA in a tune-up game for the World Baseball Classic. He suffered the torn ligament in that game.

The Twins say May will get a second opinion on Sunday, but the expectation is that he's done for the season.

With May out, the fifth spot in the rotation is now a competition between Tyler Duffey, Jose Berrios, Adalberto Mejia, Justin Haley and Ryan Vogelsong, according to Twins Daily.

Joel Zumaya expected to miss entire season with torn ulnar collateral ligament

The Twins were hoping hard-throwing right-hander Joel Zumaya would help solidify the back-end of the bullpen this season, but he won't be contributing at all. Zumaya lasted just 13 pitches in his first live batting practice session before leaving the mound with pain in his right elbow, which turned out to be a torn ligament that will keep him out the entire season.
