Storms sweep through north central Minnesota, tornado spotted

Stormy weather in north central Minnesota Thursday evening downed trees, sent residents to basements, and spawned a tornado that the National Weather Service at one time described as "large and extremely dangerous."

The Duluth News Tribune reports the tornado was spotted in the area near Hill City, which is in Aitkin County, and Remer in Cass County.

The Weather Service issued a tornado watch for Aitkin, Carlton, and Pine Counties in Minnesota and more than 20 Wisconsin counties until 4 a.m.

Forecasters expect the storms will give way to a cooler, less humid Friday.
