Traffic snarls likely this weekend as I-94 closes in St. Paul

It could be a weekend of traffic trouble in the Twin Cities, with I-94 in St. Paul topping a big list of road closures.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation will close both sides of I-94 from 10 p.m. Friday to remove the northbound Lafayette Bridge in St. Paul, near the I-35E junction.

According to MnDOT, the eastbound lanes of the interstate will be closed between Highway 52 and Highway 61, while the westbound will be closed between Highway 61 and I-35E.

The eastbound lanes are expected to stay closed until 5 a.m. Monday, but the road should re-open westbound by 5 p.m. Saturday. MnDOT says Mounds Boulevard will remain accessible to and from the interstate.

There will be signed detours in place, but drivers have been warned to expect delays. It could potentially cause problems for anyone heading into St. Paul for the Minnesota Wild's home opener at the Xcel Energy Center against the St. Louis Blues.

MPR reports that there are some other significant closures this weekend, not least Highway 100 in Edina which will be closed southbound all weekend starting at 10 p.m. Friday between Highway 62 and I-494.

Also starting Saturday, the Highway 7 bridge over Highway 100 will be closing for a year.

Other closures include southbound Highway 51/Snelling Avenue in St. Paul, between the east and west I-94 ramps, and southbound I-35E at Vadnais Heights, which will be down to a single lane overnight on Friday, with the occasional full closure at 15 minute intervals.

MnDOT says there will also be lane closures for the ongoing improvement works on I-494 at Plymouth.
