Truck pulled from MN lake was reported stolen – 16 years ago

Police in Benton County have recovered a pickup truck stolen almost 16 years ago. Unfortunately for the owner, it was found in a frozen lake.

In a posting on its Facebook page, the Benton County Sheriff's Office reports it successfully removed a truck from Mayhew Lake, northeast of St. Cloud, on Thursday, after a fisherman who lowered a camera into the lake to check for fish spotted it beneath the ice.

Divers from the Stearns and Benton Dive Team responded to the scene, about 100 yards north of the public access and 25 yards from the west shore of the lake, where the pickup was submerged in about 12 feet of water.

After confirming nobody was in the truck, police looked to find out more about the vehicle itself, with the license plate showing it had been reported stolen in March 2000 from a home in nearby Graham Township.

"The condition of the pickup truck suggested that it had been submerged for a significant period of time," the Sheriff's Office said, posting several pictures of the water-damaged truck after it was lifted from the lake.

There's no word yet on whether the truck's owner has been contacted by the Sheriff's Office. Lake users have been warned not to venture on the area where the truck was found, which has been marked off, because of the thin ice.

Here are some more images of the truck.
