An overflow crowd packed into the Elk River School District's board meeting Monday night, eager to discuss the controversy over the suspension of a Rogers High School student for an inappropriate Twitter message, the Star Tribune reports.

The student, Reid Sagehorn, was suspended for seven weeks after he replied to a rumor on an ask.fm page that he “made out” with a 28-year-old teacher. Sagehorn responded “actually, yes,” in apparent sarcasm, but the district didn’t find the matter funny and suspended him.

Several speakers at the school board meeting said they believed the punishment was too harsh for the situation, and expressed concern that Sagehorn's future could be damaged by the controversy. Others said the reputation of the teacher involved has been damaged as well, according to FOX 9.

“I feel sorry for both of them,” said Al Spilles, whose son was co-captain of the Rogers High football and basketball teams last year, according to the Star Tribune.

Neither the teacher nor Reid Sagehorn attended the meeting, but Sagehorn’s parents, Curt and Lori Sagehorn, and two of the family’s attorneys were present.

The school board did not have the item on its agenda and did not discuss it at the meeting.

Sagehorn is now attending high school in another district, which has not been disclosed. In a weekend interview, Sagehorn said he has apologized to the teacher in writing.
