Minn. remains hot spot for generating patents

Companies in the Twin Cities and Rochester continue to make Minnesota one of the top places for innovation in the United States, the Star Tribune reports.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul area had the ninth-highest number of patents issued in any metropolitan area in America, an average of 3,068 per year between 2007 and March 2012, according to data put together by the Brookings Institution.

Boston Scientific, 3M, Medtronic, Honeywell and Seagate Technology were some of the top patent-creating companies in the Twin Cities metro.

The Star Tribune notes Rochester had the third-highest number of patents issued per capita in the country -- thanks mostly to IBM and Mayo Clinic.

San Jose, Calif., home to the Silicon Valley, remains the nation's innovation leader, according to the Oakland Tribune.
