Twins part ways with veteran pitcher Ryan Vogelsong

Another name is out of the competition for the final spot in the Twins' rotation.

The Minnesota Twins have parted ways with veteran right-hander Ryan Vogelsong.

According to the Twins, Vogelsong was granted his release after he requested it following a meeting with Twins manager Paul Molitor Tuesday morning.

The Twins say Vogelsong met with Molitor before the game against Philadelphia and said he'd like a chance to start. However, he was falling behind Jose Berrios, Adalberto Mejia and Tyler Duffey for the 5th spot in the rotation.

"We talked with Ryan this morning and it was one of those hard conversations to have," Molitor told reporters Tuesday. "I can't say enough about what he brought to the camp. I've had multiple players come in here and tell me about how guys like him and [Matt] Belisle made their camp."

Vogelsong, 39, is 61-75 with a 4.48 ERA in 289 major league appearances over 12 seasons. He won two World Series championships with the Giants.

"We felt like we had a few people in front of him in terms of that rotation situation," Molitor said Tuesday. "Out of respect to him, we wanted to give him time to see what else is out there with other clubs in terms of opportunities."
