Two dead after minivan hits ice in Renville County

Two men from Willmar died after the minivan in which they were passengers hit an icy patch in Renville County Friday, according to the Star Tribune. They were ejected from the minivan when it rolled over.

The Renville County Sheriff's Office identified the dead men as Jose Lopez Deleon, 31, and Julio A. Giron, 23.

The driver of the 2001 Dodge Caravan and another passenger were hospitalized in Hutchinson with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver, Jose Prado-Marquez, was wearing a seatbelt, authorities said. The men who died were not. It's unclear whether the surviving passenger was wearing a seatbelt.

KLGR reported the crash occurred at 3:15 p.m. on Renville Co. Rd. 16, about 11 miles northwest of Hector. After the driver lost control , the minivan rolled several times into a ditch.

The Renville County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

A Minnesota State Patrol spokesman said Thursday that most single-vehicle crashes are caused by drivers going too fast.

In Duluth, the patrol says drivers traveling too fast on icy roads have doubled the number of crashes this winter compared to last, Northlands NewsCenter reports.
