Two Harbors toddler who fell into septic tank dies

The toddler critically injured after falling into a septic tank in northeastern Minnesota has died.

The St. Louis County Sheriff confirmed 3-year-old Mick Johnston of Two Harbors died on Monday evening.

"The patient in this case sadly passed away late last night at the Essentia St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth," a statement from the Sheriff's Office said.

"The exact cause of death is unknown, but believed to be from complications caused by this incident."

The boy was unresponsive when he was pulled from the tank in Duluth Township after accidentally falling in at around 7:20 p.m. on Sunday. He was taken by helicopter to the hospital in Duluth.

The incident has the sheriff’s office reminding people to be careful with children and septic tanks.

They’re urging parents "to keep children away from access locations to septic tanks, and to inspect your septic tanks to insure that entry points are properly secured."
