'U' not on board with expanding alcohol sales just yet

The University of Minnesota has some concerns over expanding alcohol sales to other major arenas on campus, the Star Tribune reports.

Rep. Dan Schoen, DFL-St. Paul Park, proposed a bill that would allow beer and wine to be sold at both Gopher hockey and basketball games after nearly $1 million in alcohol was sold at TCF Bank Stadium last season, equal to $80,000 in state tax revenue.

Schoen says the alcohol sales proved "Armageddon did not happen" and booze could be monitored.

University lobbyist Todd Iverson tells the newspaper that the "U" would like to wait another season before implementing beer and wine sales at other arenas.

“What we’re asking for is that we do the two-year experiment on football at the stadium," Iverson said. "We just want a little time to think about this.”

Iverson also says more games, many at night, are played at Mariucci and Williams and have very different atmospheres from games played at TCF Bank Stadium--factors that might make the university more reluctant to bring alcohol into the mix.

The stadium alcohol bill was accepted for possible inclusion in this year’s omnibus House liquor bill.

House OKs alcohol sales at Gophers football stadium

Representatives passed a bill Friday that allows beer to be sold at the University of Minnesota's on-campus TCF Bank Stadium. Alcohol sales would be limited to luxury suites and a designated beer garden. A similar measure passed the Senate earlier this week. The plan still needs approval from Gov. Mark Dayton and the university’s Board of Regents.

TCF Stadium braces for first alcohol sales

University officials are carefully preparing for the first alcohol sales at TCF Bank Stadium at the University of Minnesota on Saturday. Fans at the football team's home opener will be able to buy beer and wine – only two drinks at a time – and take the beverages back to their seats. University regents in July approved a two-year trial of alcohol sales at games.

U of M board to vote on beer, wine sales at TCF Bank Stadium

The University of Minnesota's Board of Regents is expected to vote this week on a resolution to allow "beer or beer and wine sales" in the premium-seating section of TCF Bank Stadium and in a single "beer garden" during Gopher home football games. The vote is expected to wrap up years of debate about whether and where alcohol ought to be sold.

House bill would allow beer sales at TCF Bank Stadium

Gophers fans could buy beer in the stadium's 37 suites and at a beer garden, if a bill makes it through the Legislature and the university's regents approve the plan.
