U of M proposes taking over Fairview Health

University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler is suggesting the U of M acquire Fairview Health Services, one of the biggest hospital and clinic chains in the Twin Cities.

Fairview began operating the university's flagship teaching and research hospital in 1997. Now Fairview is discussing a possible merger with Sioux Falls-based Sanford Health.

Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson has raised concerns about the university's hospital being operated by an out-of-state company. Swanson plans a hearing at the Capitol on Sunday to take a closer look at the issue. That's the day before Fairview's board of directors plans a retreat.

Fairview's interim CEO tells the Pioneer Press the board will evaluate both the U of M and Sanford options then.
