U powers up experimental wind turbine

A 2.5 megawatt turbine in Rosemount will provide power for the grid and a full-scale testing ground for new technology. 3M is already planning to test a new innovation: a thin film that puts tiny ribs on the turbine blades. Researchers believe the ribs will reduce resistance and increase performance.

Faribault County’s first commercial wind farm to add 60 local jobs

Construction on the 36-megawatt Big Blue Wind Farm in Blue Earth is already underway. The 18 new wind turbines being installed feature nacelle enhancements and a more aerodynamic blade design that optimizes energy output -- enough to power about 20,000 homes per year. The south-central Minnesota wind farm is scheduled to be operating by the end of the year.

New wind farm could face big fines if turbines kill eagles

The Fish and Wildlife Service is advising AWA Goodhue Wind to apply for a permit that would reduce its liability if any eagles are killed by the spinning turbines of its planned wind farm. Without a permit, a second offense could cost the company half-a-million dollars.

Minn. Court of Appeals says Orono man can keep wind turbine

The Minnesota Court of Appeals will allow an Orono man to keep his residential wind turbine that city officials say violates the zoning ordinance. The turbine is not as large as those seen in rural Minnesota and Iowa, homeowner Jay Nygard's machine is a vertical-axis turbine about 20 feet high.

St. Croix County could get large wind farm

The Wisconsin State Journal is reporting that Emerging Energies has applied for a permit to build Highland Wind Farm, a 41-turbine, 102.5-megawatt project in the St. Croix County towns of Forest and Cylon, about 25 miles east of the Minnesota border.

Central Minnesota wind farm a year behind schedule

The necessary permits are in place to build a 95-megawatt wind farm north of Paynesville, but Edina-based Geronimo Wind Energy is still looking for a utility company to buy its energy. A St. Cloud Times report says this has delayed construction by a year on central Minnesota's first large-scale wind farm, that includes as many as 60 turbines.
