Minneapolis-based U.S. Bank is the first major bank in the United States to offer Mobile Photo BillPay, according to a company news release. It allows users to snap a photo of their bills with a camera-enabled smartphone or tablet to set up electronic payments.

“We continue to leverage the capabilities of smartphones, and use innovative ways of making banking more convenient for our customers,” Niti Badarinath, senior vice president and leader of U.S. Bank’s mobile banking channel, said in a statement. “U.S. Bank customers were among the first in the nation to be able to use their mobile device to deposit checks. Now, we’ve made it really easy for our customers to enroll and use BillPay, add billers and pay bills whenever and wherever they choose.”

The new tool is free with U.S. Bank's iPhone, iPad, and Android mobile banking apps.

The company teamed up with San Diego-based software firm Mitek Systems to develop the new feature, first announced in December, which eliminates the need to manually enter payment information.

The Business Journal cites U.S. Bank projections that show a third of adult American consumers will use mobile photo bill pay by 2018.
